Allow events to change you. You have to be willing to grow. Growth is different from something that happens to you. You produce it. You live it. The prerequisites for growth: the openness to experience events and the willingness to be changed by them. ~ Bruce Mau

Here & Now

Karin SchmidlinI am a faculty member at the University of Waterloo, Stratford campus teaching User Experience Design on the undergrad and grad levels. I didn’t know this for the longest time, but I am a teacher. And see myself teaching until the end of my days. The University of Waterloo and the KW (Kitchener-Waterloo) ecosystem has welcomed me quite nicely after I arrived here in 2012. Aside from teaching I work at the CONRAD Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology Centre, currently building Jamii, a virtual incubation program for entrepreneurs, currently in its beta version. Together these two jobs provide me with enough creative stimulation to last a life time and I’m truly grateful for that.

Then & When

My background and skills are an eclectic mix of experiences and journeys, of books I read, places I visited and people I met on the way. Put together they offer an innovative, creative and exuberant individual who is as versed outside the box as working within constraints. I have a BA in the Performing Arts from the Zurich University of the Arts and learned my craft by acting out words written by Shakespeare and more contemporary writers. Somehow acting provided me with the perfect foundation for teaching.

I strive to be a great communicator and love surrounding myself with creative people. I am interested in how the physical interacts with the digital. How educational organizations and businesses utilize digital, mobile and social media to develop their brand, and engage with their audience. How video games and their inherent magic can enhance the way we do business or learn new things. I am also deeply interested in entrepreneurship and innovation and the crucial part failure plays in their creation.

I hold a Masters Degree in Digital Media from the Center for Digital Media in Vancouver BC and was a faculty member in the Digital Arts department at the British Columbia Institute of Technology from 2006 until I moved to Waterloo, ON in the summer of 2012.

From 2000-2008 I worked for the Motion Picture Technicians Union as designer and communications coordinator and later built the multimedia department at Allegra False Creek. And even longer ago I was an Actor in Switzerland and Germany, performing in big name productions as well as in independent plays that promoted social change. They equally challenged and rewarded me.
